Turn your head, and your table mate will swipe this shrimp toast right out from under you.
Is it any wonder? The toast is layered with a savory shrimp paste, then lightly fried, so the result is a hot and crackly mini shrimp sandwich. (Call it the Vietnamese equivalent of the Croque Monsieur.)
We stacked our toasts with fresh mint, basil, and lettuce, then drizzled a tangy fish sauce concoction across the top.
Like I said, if you want to relish this appetizer slowly, keep an eye on your plate.
